The symbolism of the pentagram

The pentagram is a five-pointed star which can be surrounded by a circle. It symbolizes the union of the spirit with the natural elements (water, earth, air and fire) in the great whole of the universe symbolized by the circle. When the star of the pentacle is directed upwards, as it is here, it is considered that the spirit is symbolically turned towards the sky, and therefore towards spirituality. This symbol is very popular in neo-paganism, and is often considered as a protector.
