The inverted pentagram symbolism

A pentagram is a five-pointed star, often surrounded by a circle. It symbolizes the union of spirit with the natural elements (water, earth, air and fire) in the great whole of the universe represented by the circle. When the pentagram faces downwards, as it does here, the spirit is considered to be turned towards the earth, and therefore, by extension, towards matter.

Sometimes it is also considered that the spirit is turned towards what lies beneath the earth, in other words, hell. This is one of the reasons why the inverted pentagram is sometimes seen as a satanic symbol.
